            Shopping for and buying a portable generator can be a complicated process but it doesn’t have to be. It can be especially daunting if you are not mechanically inclined or have much experience with motors. How do you care for it? Are there certain things you cannot do with a generator? All these questions and more are important in helping have confidence in your generator purchase.

  1. Is a portable generator for indoor and outdoor use?

 

NEVER use a portable generator indoors! It can lead to death in minutes. The exhaust produces carbon monoxide which is extremely deadly to humans.

 

  1. Can I use my portable generator outside if it is raining or snowing?

 

It is never recommended to use a portable generator in wet conditions. This can lead to electrocution and will damage the generator, reducing its effectiveness.

 

  1. What is an inverter generator and how is it different from a regular portable generator?

 

An inverter generator inverts DC power to AC power by the use of an electronic microprocessor. A regular generator converts DC to AC by using brushes to deliver the power to the rotor/stator so it can be converted. Invertors create a cleaner AC power output.

 

  1. Can my generator light on fire or explode?

 

Yes. Gasoline it extremely flammable and is highly explosive in the right conditions. Always follow proper safety precautions when fueling, storing or moving gasoline or your generator.

 

  1. What kind of cords should I use for my portable generator?

 

You can use power cords with your generator but make sure that they are in good shape. That means that they have the proper grounds and are not frayed or damaged in any way. Any cord that has exposed wire should be discarded.

 

  1. Can I hook up my generator to my homes wiring system?

 

Never directly hook your portable generator to our home wiring system. This can cause all sorts of electrical issues with your wiring and is extremely dangerous.

 

 

  1. At what intervals should I inspect my generator?

 

Your generator will have an owner’s manual with a maintenance schedule that should be followed to maintain the life of your generator. It is advisable to visually inspect the generator every time you are to use it as well.

 

 

  1. How do I ground my generator and do I need to do it?

 

You can ground your generator by using a copper rod, spiking it into the ground and tying your rod to the frame of your generator with a copper wire. It is recommended that you do this if possible.
